Twitter Says Wishing Rape On A Woman Doesn't Count As Harassment

Kelly Ellis is a software engineer at Medium. She's verified on Twitter and has roughly 11,000 followers. And for the past week or so, Ellis has been the subject of relentless targeted abusive tweets from @fredcarson915. Among the barrage of 70 tweets (all of which were posted to Medium by Ellis), @fredcarson9151 tells Ellis he wishes she would be raped and calls her a "psychotic man hating 'feminist.'"
When Ellis reported the abuse, Twitter replied that its investigation found the alleged violent and abusive tweets did not violate Twitter's rules, which prohibit tweets involving violent threats, harassment, and hateful conduct. Twitter's rules explicitly state that one may not "threaten other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or disease."
Anyhow, here are some tweets that Twitter says do not rise to the level of violent, abusive, or hateful:
When Ellis responded to her harasser's tweets, @fredcarson9151 blocked her, but continued to respond to her tweets, rendering Ellis unable to report new instances of harassment.
In response to Twitter's inaction (she alleges in her tweets she has been in contact with some Twitter employees), Ellis said she'll be leaving the network.
As of this writing, @fredcarson9151 is still tweeting.
Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

There are a lot of useless gadgets on the market – Dash buttons for binders, $700 juicers, internet-connected laser pointers for cats, and the like – but Tile isn't one of them. It can find your stuff when memory fails you.
Bluetooth trackers, like Tile, are a pretty elegant tech solution for an everyday problem. They're small, typically no larger than a tin of lip balm. Almost every tracker has the same features (including Trackr, Chipolo, and, of course, Tile): the ability to ring the item from your phone, display the item's last known or current location on an app, reverse find a phone by pressing on the tracker itself, and tap into a network of the device's users to crowdsource your search when the tracker goes out of Bluetooth range.
I bought my Tile more than a year ago. Of the three trackers I considered, Tile had the most Facebook likes and therefore, perhaps, the most users ("millions," according to the company)?? Yeah. Idk. Those users, I figured, could come in handy when I lose them for good. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
But even on my own, Tile has come in handy more times than I'd prefer to admit. My boyfriend has been driven INSANE by the 90-decibel Tile chirp I activate every morning to find my door key.

Tile Slim, a thin, wallet-friendly tracker, is the company's newest product.
The company sent a review unit over, on loan, and I've been playing with it, and trying to lose my stuff ever since.
It's fundamentally the same product as the original Tile, but much slimmer and minus a key ring. There's an integrated button you can double tap to locate your phone, and it will also appear in the app with a map of its current or last known location. It has the same IP5 splash-proof rating and 100-foot Bluetooth LE range.

Americans Are Abandoning Orange Juice

Tropicana recently added a non-GMO label to its orange juices. A Minute Maid commercial emphasizes the use of real fruit. Yet despite such efforts to restore America's thirst for OJ, sales keep falling.
Trendy new cold-pressed juices and juice cleanses haven't helped. In the 12 months to July, sales of refrigerated orange juice dropped 4.1%, according to data from Nielsen. Frozen orange juice sales fell 9.7%.
This isn't just a short-term blip.
The last time orange juice sales rose was back in the 2000-01 growing season, when a Clinton still occupied the White House and George W. Bush had just been elected president. Since then, consumption has fallen by about 45%.
And as the country turns its back on the juice, it slowly disappears from supermarket shelves. On average, refrigerated orange juice lost 9.7% of its shelf space between 2012 and 2014 alone, according to data provided by the Florida Department of Citrus, a government agency. That's an average of 3.4 linear feet of shelf space per store that was once filled with OJ and now contains something else.
So is orange juice in crisis? "Many consumers still enjoy orange juice as it continues to be the top selling 100% fruit juice in the U.S.," a spokesperson for the agency said in an email. "We are working with growers to support their efforts and help share the Florida OJ story with consumers."

Why the carnage? Orange juice sits on the wrong side of a number of changes in consumer tastes, NPD food and beverage analyst Darren Seifer told BuzzFeed News. More people are focusing on cutting excess sugar from their diets, and 8 ounces of Minute Maid 100% orange juice contains 24 grams of sugar — more than a serving of some brands of vanilla ice cream.
"In the big picture, it's about the sugar," said Seifer. "People are consuming less carbonated soft drinks, juice, fruit drinks. The nation is trying to avoid sugar."
In fact, adults recently surveyed by NPD said they pay more attention to sugar content on nutrition labels than anything else, including fat and calories. And they're more likely to be cutting back on sugar as well.

Big Citrus says this is a mistake.
"There is a lot of confusion around sugar when it comes to juice," said Shannon Shepp, executive director of the Florida Department of Citrus. She noted that a serving of orange juice contains no added sugar, a fact that will soon be noted on nutrition labels under new US Food and Drug Administration rules.
In addition, a glass of OJ contains more than 100% of the recommended daily value of vitamin C, along with some potassium, folate, and thiamine, and "potassium is in fact a nutrient of concern for most Americans," she said.

On top of changing tastes, the country's orange crop has been devastated. A tree disease called citrus greening was detected in Florida, the main juice orange growing region, in 2005, and it has wreaked havoc on the industry.
“Citrus greening is certainly a factor in the drop in production, with Florida producing half the amount of oranges it did 10 years ago and about one-third the amount it did almost 15 years ago,” Shepp said. “As supply dwindles, the price increases in response.”
Orange juice consumption has declined as production has plummeted.

Unable to cure the disease, the Environmental Protection Agency in August approved the use of three antibiotics, which are sprayed onto the trees, to control the disease.
Is there hope for an OJ rebound? Euromonitor International says the FDA's new nutrition label requirements, which will measure the amount of added sugar in the total sugar count, could help.
“Although most juices are high in sugar, if consumers are more easily able to differentiate between products with naturally occurring sugar and those with added sugar, some juice categories may be able to shed some of the perceptions of offering unhealthy beverages," Euromonitor wrote in a report.
"By contrast, juice drinks and nectars with high levels of added sugar might suffer from such labeling changes.”

But since they’re probably popping up in very uncomfortable situations — like in class, when you’re playing video games, or when you’re with your friend’s parents — it’s probably good to understand why they’re happening in the first place.
BuzzFeed Health asked urologists Dr. Peter Stahl, director of male reproductive and sexual medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital, and Dr. Seth Cohen from NYU Medical Center to explain why your body is trolling you with these boners even when you’re not thinking about something sexual. Here’s what they had to say.

You can blame most of this on your fluctuating testosterone levels.
Testosterone is a hormone produced in the testicles, and it's responsible for lots of stuff that happens during puberty — like a deeper voice, a more prominent Adam's apple, facial hair, and your eventual growth spurt. It's also involved in sexual functioning, said Stahl, so it helps your penis get hard. And during puberty, it’s coursing through you like the venom that gives Bane the strength to fight Batman.
Your testosterone levels will vary throughout puberty, and Cohen said that as levels rise, feelings of arousal will too — triggering your boner.
