MOTHER The Stunner Zip Ankle Step Fray Jeans In Good Girls Do Review
My review this week is on the new MOTHER The Stunner Zip Ankle Step Fray Jeans in Good Girls Do. I have had these jeans for a couple of weeks now and worn them a couple of times with plenty of great things to say about them. You should definitely check out my review if you’re interested in them. If any of you have tried MOTHER Denim too and love their denim, let me know! I’d love to hear your thoughts on the brand as well.
The Fit: What made me fall in love with these jeans was mostly the fit of them actually (aside from the details). When I saw them online at Shopbop and saw the high rise of 9.75 inches with the shorter, cropped inseam length of 26 inches, with a small leg opening of 9.5 inches, I knew these jeans would fit me perfectly. I’m all about cropped, skinny jeans with a higher rise and these were everything I had dreamed of. Not to mention that the back pocket placement, shape, and size is amazing.
I didn’t know this at first, but I definitely understand why everyone loves MOTHER now due to the butt enhancing techniques these jeans have. I’ve received quite a lot of compliments already about how they give a rounded, uplifted appearance to the butt, and how they slim your legs at the same time. They genuinely have a perfect fit. If you love higher rises that aren’t too restricting in the waist, these are ideal! Especially if you love cropped skinny jeans too, you don’t get more perfect than the MOTHER The Stunner Zip Ankle Jeans!
The Sizing: I’ve only ever tried one other pair of MOTHER jeans before (a long time ago) and I found those ran smaller, like these do. I took this particular pair in a size 27 (I’m usually between a 26-27 in most brands) and they are quite tight. I would say if you are between sizes, go for the bigger size of the two as they are much smaller fitting. I’m not sure if the whole brand runs on the smaller side, or if it’s the two pairs of jeans I have tried, but I don’t think they have dove into the vanity sizing game and they have more of a European sizing way about them, as I always have to pick a bigger size in European brands.
Once you get your size right, you will fall in love with their fit! Luckily for me as I’m quite good with denim (I should be as I’ve been working with it for years!) I manage to get my sizing right 99% of the time, so if you’re a 26 in Citizens of Humanity, PAIGE, AG, 7 For All Mankind, Hudson etc, take a 27 in these jeans. If’ you’re a 27 in FRAME, Diesel, J Brand etc then a 27 should do it. Those are my sizes in those brands, so I hope that helps!
The Wash: Now this ‘Good Girls Do’ wash is so pretty! It’s a mid to light blue with bleached undertones and darker blue elements in places. There’s very minimal whiskering on the lap, and an even more subtle amount down the inseams at the thighs, but it’s just enough to make the jeans look broken in and worn, but still in good condition (if you were comparing them to the vintage denim scale). The butt and mid thigh to knee areas are faded as well, to give them that more natural appearance, but overall I think it’s a wash that’s much suited to the current season and one that is really nicely done, to make it look authentic. It reminds me somewhat of my Citizens of Humanity Rocket Crop Jeans in Aura actually, with more graininess and subtle bleaching.
The Denim: These jeans are made in the USA from a classic 98% cotton and 2% elastane blend of denim. I’m very much used to the super stretchy, softer denim that we have all come to know and love over the last couple of years, so whenever I go back to normal denim, it’s always a shock. I was expecting this shock with these jeans since they aren’t super stretch, however I was pleasantly surprised. These MOTHER jeans aren’t the usual 98/2 blend of denim we were used to years ago that weren’t that stretchy, but instead they are lightweight with a thinner weight to the denim, and they do stretch a fair amount actually. They are in no way a jegging or a silky denim like the PAIGE TRANSCEND, but for a 98/2 denim blend, they are very comfortable, have much more move-ability than normal, and have enough stretch to make them comfortable enough for a days wear, all while having that classic denim appeal.
The Details: Now the details! The uneven, step frayed hem was what drew my attention to these MOTHER jeans in the first place. How cool is that? I was wondering what other route they could take with jeans after the raw hem trend, but I think the lopsided version is so quirky, inventive, and fun, it’s a winner in my books! You can see from my modelled photos that it’s shorter at the front and longer in the back, however they haven’t just cut them short on the front section, then long on the back, the hemline follows all the way around the inseam to create a rounded, circular motion, but the outerseam remains blunt. You can see what I mean in the laid flat photos too. It’s a really cool take on the trend!
They also have the classic M embroidered onto the back pockets which is a MOTHER trademark to look for, as well as the little tab on the right side at the back of the waistband, just below the seam. I fell in love with the silver MOTHER label sewn into the inside of the jeans at the back too as I think it’s little details like that that really show a jeans worth. Everything else on them is kept simple and minimal, so those are the only stand out details, but trust me, these jeans are worth it for the hem alone!
Overall Opinion: If you have made it this far (you’re a dedicated reader, thank you!) then I’m sure you have guessed that my opinion of these jeans is one of pure positivity! I’m so glad that I got them from Shopbop when they popped up! I’ve been wanting a more inventive jean to wear lately as I’ve usually been sticking to classics, but I didn’t want to go bold with prints, so these fill that void extremely well for me.
Like I mentioned, the fit is perfect for my figure, the rise is just right, the back pockets are butt enhancing, the wash is a beautiful mix of mid to light blue with subtle detailing to it, the uneven raw hem is just amazing… there really are no flaws. I wouldn’t even say that I would like them to be more stretchy because I think it would ruin the character of the jeans to be honest. They need more structure to them to sit correctly. If you’re contemplating buying these, go for it, you wont regret it, and if you are looking for a new pair of jeans, I recommend these too! That’s in all honesty! Even Brooklyn Blonde loves them too!
